October is “Energy Action Month”

When evaluating a home one of the many important things to consider is energy cost. How is the home heated and cooled, what appliances are inside, how is the insulation, what about water, solar, and more. For many new homes developers and home builders are already factoring in energy efficient construction. But for many older homes the options are to live with the current utility expenses or look into improvements.

And there are many questions we field about improvements. Fortunately state and federal programs along with our local energy companies offer a lot of incentives. And this information just came across our desk today so we wanted to share this info.

What is “Smart Thermostat” and why do I need one?

Unlike your old programmable thermostat, smart thermostats use motion sensors and adaptive software to learn when you are home and what temperatures you prefer. Then, they create a customized schedule to avoid wasting energy while keeping you comfortable.
You can control these thermostats from your computer or mobile device. Want to turn on your heat before you get done skiing and get home? Use the mobile app: Nest Mobile
When you use a smart thermostat to control your heating systems, it takes away the challenge of constantly programming it and reading instructions. Wouldn’t you rather just be comfortable and start saving energy right away?
The most common brands are Nest and Ecobee which retail around $250 (only $125 after Energy Smart Rebate!).

The Steps for a 50% Rebate

  1. STEP 1: ENERGY ASSESSMENT – In order to be eligible to receive a 50% rebate for your smart thermostat you will first need to complete a home energy assessment. If you have not yet had one you can sign up HERE.
  2. STEP 2: PURCHASE THERMOSTAT – Determine which thermostat you would like to buy and purchase it. We are happy to help you with this process, just give us a call at 328-8777. Currently the only two we will provide rebates for are the Nest and the ecobee3. The Nest is also available locally at the Home Depot in Avon. **Currently these smart thermostats are only designed to work with gas heating systems (furnace/boiler). If you have all electric baseboards but are still interested in a smart thermostat, contact us for more info.
  3. STEP 3: APPLY FOR REBATE – After installing your thermostat visit EnergySmartColroado.com and fill out our rebate form. You will need to provide proof of purchase which can be emailed to eagle@energysmartcolorado.com
  4. TERMS/CONDITIONS: EnergySmartColorado will rebate 50% of the cost of the thermostat up to $125. Limit one per household. Must be EnergySmart participant and have completed an energy assessment.
