Battling Winter On the Home Front

Winter is Finally Here!

cold-icicles-houseIt seemed as if winter was never going to get to Denver. We had weeks of sun and sixty-degrees followed by more weeks of shorts wearing and patio parties. But finally, over the past two weeks, Mother Nature it was finally time to throw some snow over the city without it melting the very next day. With the cold weather here, we have some tips on how to prepare your house for anything winter might throw your way.

Keep All the Warmth in the House

Ever heard the phrase “don’t want to heat the whole neighborhood?” well that’s exactly why you should install storm windows and doors throughout your house. Make sure there is weather stripping around each door and window as well to keep any cold air from coming into your house.

Have a professional clean and inspect the chimney to make sure everything is working properly. While they are there, also have them check your heating systems to make sure all vents are clear and to see if any filters need replacing.

Quick DIY Fixes for any House

Here are a few quick tips to help organize around the house and take on any cold problems:

  • If you have a lock that is frozen and you cannot get your key in, take a lighter and light the end of your key until it is warm. This allows the key to slip in and thaw the lock.
  • This is probably one of the best things we have ever read for all Colorado bike riders, making your own snow tires using zip ties. By simply placing zip ties around the front and back tires of your bike, you have now made your own set of snow tires, how brilliant is that? This is for all those hardcore bikers we see cruising the streets of Broadway on their way to work when the snow is falling and the roads are not very drivable even for a car.
  • How about an alternative for sidewalk salt to put on your ice covered driveway so you don’t have salt eating away at your concrete? Mix 1 teaspoon Dawn dishwashing liquid, 1 Tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, and ½ gallon hot/warm water and pour over your walkways and driveway.

Just like preparing your house for the spring, preparing your house for the winter is just as important. These tips will help your home stay happy this cold season.
