Rosenberg’s Bagels and Deli

Our New York Clients have few complaints when they move to Denver. They rave about the lack of traffic. They cheer the 300+ days of sunshine and amazing Colorado weather. The share how they enjoy being able to see the sky when they walk downtown, how they have room to walk downtown, and their love of our Rocky Mountain Backyard for skiing and hiking. They most certainly tell us how they can afford to buy HUGE condos and lofts in our Downtown for prices that might not even purchase a parking space in New York.

They even rave to their friends back home how our restaurants are on par (or better) than those that are worshipped in the big apple… with one exception.

All the New Yorkers who have relocated for Denver have been sobbing about missing their New York Bagels. It is one consistent complaint about Denver that East Coasters seem to be in agreement on. Some say it is the water, some say it is the altitude, others simply believe it is a magical essence in New York that can’t be duplicated. Whatever the reason, for as long as I can remember my New York friends have taken trips back home with a clear checklist to eat bagels every day they are there and, if possible, come back with a stack of Bagel goodness in their carry on.

Well, New York Transplants, I have good news for you.

One Denverite felt the same way you did and decided to do something about it. With a belief that the water constitution was the key ingredient Rosenberg’s Bagels has opened their doors to bring the New York Bagel to Five Points. They apparently have found a way to duplicate the water by adding/removing minerals (we don’t know exactly) to be able to bake fresh and delicious New York Bagels here.

It doesn’t stop there. They also are offering all the great things New Yorkers are used to. You have your multiple types of lox and fishes, your salted meats, your egg salad. I didn’t see chopped liver when I stopped in, but maybe it was just an off day.

Either way, the line on a recent weekend stretched through the hallway and out the door, easily over a half an hour. It looks like someone has cracked the bagel code.

I ordered an everything bagel with Scottish Salmon, cream cheese, and the traditional garnishes. It was delicious, although I have to say I’m more of a Norwegian salmon person. But I had to try their saltiest version to see.

Now it’s your turn. Visit Rosenberg’s Bagels and come back to comment on what you think.

This might just be a reason to give Five Points another look. The neighborhood is booming, and one bagel spot like this is reason enough to want to be close by. Then you can walk over to beat the crowds by being there when they open.

Don’t forget the Transit

Sure, we keep talking about all the great restaurants opening up in the New Denver Union Station terminal. But the real heart of Union Station is the transit.

Denver Union Station is the hub for the entire Light Rail System. From this central location at the Newly renovated Terminal and the awesome Union Station Neighborhood being developed Denver residents can travel throughout our city. One of the most exciting elements of our rail system is the new East Corridor access line underway that will carry travelers to and from Denver International Airport.

The DIA line is the one I am most excited about. Once that is open the days of guessing how much time it will take to get to the airport, dealing with traffic (which gets worse every year), parking, parking fees, and all those annoying commuting elements will be replaced by a train timetable and the ability to sit and relax on the train.

The benefits of our new transit hub at Denver Union Station don’t stop with the light rail. Denver Union Station is also the hub of national rail lines and local shuttle and bus transportation options. This morning when taking some photos inside the new terminal I checked to see where today’s travelers might be going.

Two options were taking off today out of Union Station via the Amtrak schedule. The first was the California Zephyr that begins in Chicago before arriving in Denver and then continues on to Glenwood Springs and finishes in Emeryville (San Francisco). Today’s train was Westbound.

The other scheduled trip was a bus departing for Vail. That means there IS a way to get up to at least one of our amazing ski resorts without driving. I’m hoping the list of options keeps growing.

Most of us are already familiar with the local 16th street shuttle and a new shuttle line along 18th is being added.

As more and more transit continues to grow, as the RTD lines are extended, and as national Rail continues to evolve the location at Union Station is bound to become an even more attractive amenity for downtown residents.

And as you can see from the images below, the new terminal is AMAZING and offers great restaurants for dining, bars for celebrating, and hotels for guest to stay and enjoy our downtown.

Who else is excited to consider the new Denver Union Station and the light rail to DIA as the the first stop on their vacation?

Denver Union Station’s Newest Restaurant

Yesterday was an exciting day. Making last minute dinner plans in our active city often means playing detective in finding a seat (or two) at any of our awesome Downtown Denver restaurants. While we aren’t yet like New York where reservations can be consumed weeks in advance, it certainly is busy enough that a last minute search on a Thursday night at prime time can be tough.

I was more than pleasantly surprised when a new name, one that I recognized from our previous posts, appeared in the available list. That new name was Stoic and Genuine, the newest addition to the Denver Union Station and Crawford Hotel offering.

Score!

We grabbed ourselves a reservation and raced over early hoping for a nice spot at the bar to relax before dinner. Unfortunately, while we were fortunate to snag a reservation by the time we arrived it appeared the rest of Denver had heard as well. It was packed with the energy and excitement of Denver residents checking out the new hotspot in town.

One of the owners was there appeared and kindly introduced herself and we spent a few minutes waiting to spring on any vacating bar seats. However, there was no signs that anyone would be giving up a spot at this hot spot anytime soon. With 30 minutes we decided to adjourn to the nearby Cruise Room for a retro and cool pre dinner cocktail.

A Denver Urban Bump (a good thing) to the Cruise Room for staying classy. We didn’t mind spending some time there waiting for our Stoic and Genuine reservation one bit. For those of you who haven’t been the the CR for some time it still is a great gem of the city.

We wrapped up at the Cruise Room and returned for on time for our reservation to find they were ready for us. I mention this because it was only their second day of being open to the public, they were packed, and still they were running right on schedule. Opening week for all restaurants should go so well.

The place is amazing from a design and architecture standpoint. There is a great mix of old and new with some custom iron and wood pieces adorning the walls, ceilings, lighting, and more being paired with the historic structural elements such as columns and small finishes. There is a huge bar seating area with open glass to view the ocean delights on one side and a large social (filled with laughter and smiles) bar opposite serving up spirits and vino. The ceiling are high, the energy is fun, and you can even watch the Union Station fountain light show outside via the windows. This place is cool!

Now on to the food. We saw oysters flying out of the seafood bar and to almost every table, clearly one of the most popular items on the menu along with a series of crudo dishes such as Big Eye Tune with jalapeño and friend avocado (yum on the avocado folks). We tried some crudo and the soft shell crab which comes with a corn soup creation that was delicious.

Another popular items our server recommended, which we didn’t try, was the lobster roll. I think 25% of the people eating last night had a lobster roll delivered to their table. I would have tried it but you have a tough time getting me to eat anything cooked when I can have raw. After all, we don’t have an ocean next door so when the opportunity is there I say go for the freshest item you can.

Which is why I ordered the Uni salad appetizer as well. The Uni was fresh and tasty, and lately it has been impossible to find it at any of the area sushi restaurants (believe me I try weekly) but sadly there just wasn’t enough of it. But keep in mind I’m a purist, and I am sure the salad with a little Uni combination is probably what the majority would prefer. I would much rather have a pure bite with a touch of lemon, so I’ll just have to wait for the Uni return at my local Sushi spots.

Last, but not least would be the dessert menu which had a ton of favorites including the Whoopie Pie that our server recommended. I did not try it but my friend has a pregnant wife waiting at home and was smart enough to order her one to go. Whatever was in the desserts it certainly was a hit. The table next to us had desserts all around at a table of 6 and they were consumed in a flash of forks and smiles.

Needless to say, I’ll be back. The place is so warm and inviting that Stoic & Genuine is good for a full dinner or just a quick drink and oyster tray happy hour. Wonderful.

Now I can’t wait to see the new Crawford hotel. From the restaurant the second floor hallway and room doors is visible, which means those guests will have a tough time resisting the draw of the great ambiance and energy of S & G below. If Stoic and Genuine is any indication of the overall Crawford Hotel experience I am guessing this will be the new hot spot destination for Denver.

Dana Crawford was even there with friends, enjoying the great food in a hotel named in her honor. The gentleman at the table next to us shared that he and a group were enjoying a nights stay in the Crawford. Color me jealous.

Alright Denver Urban fans, this is your Union Station Update. Let me know if you go to check it out and any favorite items on the menu.

Congrats to the great team at Stoic and Genuine and the Crawford Hotel. This might just change our best oysters in Denver poll so make sure to vote after you give Stoic & Genuine their turn shucking ocean treats for you too.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

It’s official Denver, Dunkin Donuts has FINALLY opened their first Denver location. This morning at 5 am the doors of a new Dunkin Donuts Broadway Location at 366 Broadway. The lines stretched out the door and outside into the parking lot while cars lined up down Broadway to take part in this Grand Opening Event.

Who else came out for the biggest opening in the world of coffee and donuts for Denver… why none other than the mascots of the various Denver sports teams.

Being the first to visit Denver’s newest Dunkin Donuts has it’s perks too. As part of the Dunkin Donuts invasion of Denver they are offering free medium-sized hot or iced coffee (one per customer) and 99-cent medium lattes through September 29. That’s right folks… for a limited time your Dunkin Donuts Coffee is FREE. The last day for your free coffee just happens to be National Coffee Day. For those who went at 5 am the first 100 guests to visit received $10 Dunkin’ Donuts cards.

5 am is just a little too early for us… but here is what the lines looked like at 8 am. Yep, I think Dunkin is going to be popular here in Denver.

Denver is booming folks, and this is not the only Dunkin Donuts coming to Denver. Dunkin Donuts opened a new location at the Airport today too and Denver mayor Michael Hancock will be the first customer at that store. Their ribbon cutting ceremony will take place 15 minutes after the opening at Broadway.

What happens next… the third Denver Dunkin Donuts will be opening up near Sloan’s Lake in the Jefferson Park neighborhood (and pretty much the edge of Lohi). If you live in this Northwest Denver area of town your opening is just around the corner.

If you haven’t been paying attention to the growth and expansion of our great city, it is clear everyone else is. From a new Trader Joes to Dunkin Donuts to whatever goes into Union Station… we have nothing but stories about growth.

Living Downtown is simply amazing. We have light rail, public parks, restaurants, bistros, B-Cycle and now DUNKIN DONUTS.

Everyone told us we had to try Sassafras. They raved about the breakfast… from the delicious Chicken Fried Eggs to the Duck Fat Sausage Gravy and Biscuits.

When it comes to breakfast you don’t need to twist our arm. We put it on the list and finally got a chance to check it out.

Sassafras American Eatery is located on the edge of LoHi in what might be more appropriately classified as Jefferson Park. It is just down the street from the Safeway on Federal and 26th in the Historic William J. Dunwoody House dating back to 1889.

The house is beautiful with warmth blanketing you when you walk in the door. Hardwood floors, rustic tables, and plenty of sunny windows filled with some of the original stained glass. The smell of coffee and bacon (you know that smell, the one that makes you start drooling) fills the restaurant.

Sassafras, in my opinion, is about comfort food. They are serving up the delicious breakfast items that make remind you that people once ate breakfast without counting calories. The do have a bit of southern flair in their menu items such as their starter menu of Elvis Beignets, Biscuits and Gravies (no misspelling there) and Fried Green tomatoes.

We had a group of four so we chose the biscuits and gravies and the beignets to kick us off. Delicious, although our Beignets might have been in the oven a bit too long. We might have noticed if we hadn’t all dived on them the minute they came out.

We sampled two of the Biscuit gravies.. with the Duck Gravy being by FAR the best. Someone had the deep south benedict, another the traditional eggs and bacon… but two of us (myself included) got what I consider (and our table considered) the best breakfast item of all. And the winner is…

EGGS SARDOU (pictured above)
Roasted Garlic Grit Cake, Creamed Spinach and Artichoke, Cornmeal crusted fried Oysters, Sassafras smoked Bacon, Fresno Chili Hollandaise $12.

Yum.

So how does Sassafras add up. The food is great, the atmosphere is awesome, the coffee is rock star and the staff are super duper friendly for a perfect score.

Just be careful about going on the weekends… there can be quite the line. And with good reason.

This past week Old Major, a new eatery specializing in “Seafood, Swine, and Wine” opened it’s doors in the Lower Highlands (LoHi) Neighborhood at the 33rd and Tejon area.

If there is one thing LoHi Condo and Home residents know, its that they can look forward to a great new restaurant opening almost every month. March is the month of the Swine!

Old Major has a very unique focus brought to us by chef Justin Brunson broken into 5 core areas.

Small Plates: Including Duck Fat Fries, Black Truffle Pistachio Sausage, Crispy, Pork Cheeks, PEI Mussels and more. This section is how to get your meal started off right. Don’t forget to enjoy the Pretzel rolls that everyone has been raving about.

The Butcher: You know what this is all about! The Butcher section includes all the great pork (swine), poultry, and red meat entrees. Feeling super hungery, try their huge 24 ounce wood-fired bone-in rib-eye. We personally can’t help but be drawn to the swine they claim is their specialty. One of their facebook fans posted the question “Can you do schweinehaxe?” and they got a quick response “yes we can. Just give chef 48 hours notice on your reservation. Hell yes.” I call that living up to their Swine specialty.

The Farmer: Don’t worry if your are the vegetarian among your Urban Tribe of Carnivores, they have a section of the menu just for you. Don’t worry, while salads are on the Farmer section there are some great creative entrees for those who prefer a lighter side.

The Monger: Seafood, Seafood, Seafood… the Monger section takes care of those who want something from the sea (or river). Their wood fired oven means you can enjoy a fish of the day such as their wood-grilled sturgeon, or scallops, or more.

Sides: Yes, there is a section so you can pick the favorite side dishes to accompany whatever your choice.

Did you think we forgot Dessert. Well don’t worry because there are 5 items on the desert menu set up to accompany each of the different tastes brought to you by Pastry chef Nadine Donovan.

Of course you might just want to stop in and relax at the bar. The remodel of this building (next to the Denver Firehouse Church) has been amazing. We can go on and on about the modern but cozy interior design but we prefer to let their Facebook Photo Stream show you.

Enjoy and if you REALLY love Old Major then we have an Old Major Page with the closest listings so you can walk for your daily does of swine.

We don’t have to tell you that LoHi is booming. The transformation has been amazing to experience. The new restaurants that started the foodie trend (Linger, LoLa, Colt and Gray, LoHi Steak Bar) helped to make the community a Denver favorite. This increased the pace of development bringing about new Urban Townhome, midrise, and lowrise projects in LoHi.

Of course those new residents brought in more people and a higher density of population. Which means more hungry folks to draw in more restaurants.

And thus we see more great restaurants opening their doors. Its a growing neighborhood where real estate moves quickly. We began tracking average LoHi sales prices so you can see just what is happening on a per square foot asking price basis.

But the best way to learn what is happening in LoHi is to contact us at 303-522-7746 or info@denverurban.net.

McLoughlin’s Restaurant and Bar in Riverfront Park has done a HUGE remodel that passed inspection this morning. That’s right folks, McLoughlin’s has reopened.

The Plaza in the heart of Riverfront Park is certainly heating up and the original tenants are the ones doing the expansion. First we saw Zengo open its new Wine Bar and Bistro Al Lado next door, then Ink expanded their own location on Little Raven (and tried a brief stint as an ice creamery), and now McLoughlin’s has taken over the adjacent space to create roughly TRIPLE the amount of square footage they had before.

That means a brand new bar, lots of booths, and even a some extra square feet on the outside patio for sitting.

The space is HUGE and it creates a new large pub atmosphere for the residents of Riverfront Park to enjoy.

The space opened up when local tenant Colorado Banks of Colorado vacated the space. So the McLoughlin brothers knocked down a wall, added some great design elements, and in less than 30 days of being closed created their transformation. For the three buildings on the plaza (Promenade Lofts, Riverfront Tower, and the Park Place Lofts) it means even more to enjoy just outside their front door.

For loyal McLoughlin’s fans many of the menu items stayed the same.. but not all. While some items have been added and dropped the end result is true to the original menu tastes from before.

From a Real Estate perspective, the growth in Riverfront Park and LoHi (including the new King Sooper Grocery store) are all signs of just how strong the Denver Urban core is. New building, both for sale and rent, have increased the density and created a great base for restaurant visionaries to come in and open their doors for all of us to enjoy.

Riverfront Park, long considered one of the most sought after addresses has also had some of the highest per square feet prices. When the market had it’s bump in the road development slowed down as creditors refused to fund new projects at questionable per square foot prices. But that doesn’t mean the resale market didn’t flourish and right now Riverfront Park’s days on market is very low.

Great listings just don’t stay available for long. And the many dining, greenspace, entertainment, and transit amenities just outside your front door are part of the reason why.

The Berkeley and West Highland areas have certainly been growing over the past few years. Tennyson Street got a major facelift including new planters, lighting, and a more walkable streetscape. It was no small project and approximately $2.1 million dollars was allocated to Tennyson Street between 38th and 44th Avenues.

Berkeley and Tennyson street is the home of great restaurants, pubs, galleries, and the Tennyson Street First Friday Art Walk. When clients ask about up and coming neighborhoods that offer character, charm, and walkable amenities Berkeley is one to check out.

Following in the footsteps of the Lower Highlands which claimed a boom in Breweries (Prost, Ale House at Amato’s, Denver Beer Company) the Berkeley area now has a new Brewery of its own. Tennyson Street now offers it’s local residents the frothy treats of Da Steeg Brewing. Da Steeg Brewing is a micro brewery in the Highlands providing quality craft beers to the Metro Denver beer enthusiasts.

Now there’s no sign above the door, just an image of a Belgian Style Beer to tempt you in the door. Today is their grand opening and these are the ales they have lined up

Beers on Tap for Friday’s Grand Opening:

Pomegranate Acai Wheat 5.5% ABV

English Mild on Nitro 5.1% ABV

Imperial Pumpkin Ale 11% ABV

And here are their hours for opening weekend:

Friday, Feb 1st: 4 PM – 10 PM Grand Opening

Saturday, Feb 2nd: 4 PM – 10 PM

Sunday, Feb 3rd: 3:30 PM – The end of the Super Bowl + 1 hour

Visit the De Steeg Page on Denver Urban and you can also see the available listings closest to this location. In fact each of our listings will show you the closest amenities, restaurants, parks, light rail stations and more. Cheers!

Our new puppy needs exercise, and lots of it. So yesterday I set out on a dog walk to find the buzz of LoHi… the New Jezebel’s Restaurant at 3301 Tejon Street in the site of the old Squeaky Bean.

You have to remember that when the Squeaky Bean pulled up it’s roots and moved out of the LoHi space local residents mourned. I believe the entire LoHi residential neighborhood within 5 blocks of that corner wore nothing but black for a month… or maybe it was just a bunch of hipsters on the street. What made it quite the controversy was some questions about how things occurred between the owners of the Squeaky Bean and their landlords at Rosa Lindas. It was sad to see the community sling mud back and forth in discussing two local restaurant favorites. Denverites are passionate about being loyal to those who feed them well.

But time heals all wounds, as was certainly the case here. The Bean found a great new (and much larger location) in LoDo and now in a balance of scales LoHi has a great new restaurant to fill that great corner space at 33rd and Tejon.

Bid welcome to Jezebel’s Restaurant brought to us by the same great owners who created 8 Rivers. Husband and wife team Wanda James and Scott Durrah with partner/general manager Scott Perry have created a new Southern food destination for the foodies of the Lower Highlands. The restaurant on the inside has the same familiar look and feel from the Squeaky Bean days with some significant changes. The space is bigger, as it appears that the folks at Rosa Linda’s transferred some of their space to allow Jezebel’s more seating and kitchen space.

I stopped by, dog on a leash, and chatted about their schedule. Their theme is “Good food with Soul” and the menu (listed below) is not finalized but a good indication of what you can expect on any given day. Jezebel’s is open for dinner only currently but you can expect lunch to start up next week and the new brunch offering (Southern Brunch… Yum) should start the first week of February.

They mentioned that while Southern is a term they use, perhaps soul food is better. It appears that some folks thought that “Southern Food” meant alligator and possum which is definitely not on the menu.

Speaking of menu… here it is as of 1/5/2013:

LoHi, as a neighborhood to live in or to visit, gets better every day. This small neighborhood on the edge of Downtown Denver and Riverfront Park has evolved into one of the most (maybe the most) sought after neighborhood to live in. New Restaurants continue to open at a rapid pace, the light rail and trails nearby at Union Station make it very walkable, and of course… the mix of modern townhomes, mid rise condos, and historic Denver square or modern homes means there is something for everyone. To learn more about the Lohi neighborhood visit our Denver Urban neighborhood page here or you can follow the twitter feed of new listings @lohidenverco. For a showing or to do a tour of this neighborhood please contact us at 303-522-7746.
